Social Media Designer — Data Analysis & Visual Storytelling job description

Summary

Qwoted connects journalists with the experts, brands, and small businesses who can actually help them tell a story. We're the matchmaker between "I need a source by 3pm" and "I have exactly the person you need." Along the way, we end up sitting on a genuinely interesting pile of data about how PR and journalism actually work day to day, and we want someone who can turn that into stories worth sharing.

We need a data-savvy storyteller to look at real patterns in how journalists request sources and how PR pros pitch them, then turn what you find into visuals and short write-ups that work on social and have a real shot at getting picked up by media outlets. You will use Qwoted's internal network data and industry data to find these patterns and statistics that would be interesting to media and PR audiences.

This role is about creating data-related content for display on social channels. If you have the skill to work with raw data and you love to turn data into compelling visuals that create scroll-stopping experiences on social channels, this may be for you!

What you'll do

  • Create compelling content for social media channels
  • Analyze Qwoted's platform data (pitch activity, source requests, response rates, demographic patterns, beat trends, etc.) to find angles worth telling
  • Build clean charts and graphics that are social media ready
  • Write short, punchy captions and summaries that explain the "so what" in plain English, built for social feeds first
  • Package findings with enough supporting data and context that a journalist could plausibly write a full story off of it (stats, methodology notes, a quote-ready line or two, sources)
  • Suggest new angles as you spend time in the data. We don't want someone who just executes a list, we want someone who spots things we haven't asked about yet
  • What you bring

  • A knack for finding the interesting thread in a boring dataset
  • Experience creating data visualization to get earned media pickup, not just internal reporting
  • A sense of how to translate graphs and data for social carousels (or videos) on social platforms
  • Ability to create interactive visuals
  • Newsroom or journalism background is a bonus
  • East Coast hours or general US-based availability preferred for overlap with our team
  • Technical Skills

  • Working knowledge of data analysis tools (SQL, R, Python) and visualization platforms (Observable, Flourish, etc.)
  • Experience with design and motion graphics tools (Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Premiere, After Effects; also Canva or Affinity), plus data visualization/mapping tools (Mapcreator, Flourish, Infogram, Esri, Observable)
  • Familiarity with front-end frameworks/libraries such as Svelte, D3.js, and Three.js for building and organizing interactive projects
  • Experience with cloud hosting and deployment tools (e.g., Google Cloud, Fastly) for publishing work
