Lead Technical Artist (f/d/m) job description

About the job

HOLOGATE is looking for an experienced Lead Technical Artist (f/d/m) to lead and grow our Technical Art team across our Unreal Engine projects. You will remain hands-on, working between Art and Programming to improve our pipelines, solve technical challenges and help our teams get the best visual quality and performance from VR/XR.
 
You will drive improvements across performance and optimization, art pipelines and tooling, engine integration, prototyping and gameplay features, materials and VFX, and animation workflows. As Lead, you will set technical standards, mentor the team and push the quality and efficiency of how we create and integrate real-time content.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor and grow our Technical Art team while remaining hands-on across projects.
  • Bridge Art and Programming, supporting engine integration and connecting gameplay logic with animation and visual systems.
  • Improve art pipelines, tooling and automation to make content creation and integration faster and more reliable.
  • Drive profiling and optimization, pushing visual quality while meeting the demanding performance requirements of VR/XR.
  • Prototype gameplay features and implement technical solutions in Unreal Engine.
  • Develop solutions across materials, VFX, animation and rigging workflows.
  • Identify technical and pipeline bottlenecks, establish best practices and improve how Art and Development work together.


Key Qualifications

  • Several years of professional experience as a Technical Artist, with experience leading and mentoring Technical Artists.
  • Professional experience in games, XR or a comparable interactive real-time 3D environment.
  • Strong hands-on experience with Unreal Engine, including profiling, optimization and real-time performance.
  • Experience developing art pipelines, tools and automation, including DCC-to-engine workflows and scripting with Python, Blueprint or similar technologies.
  • Broad Technical Art experience across areas such as engine integration, prototyping/gameplay, materials, VFX and animation pipelines.
  • Strong technical judgement and problem-solving skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across Art and Programming.
  • Very good English skills; German is a plus.


Desirables

  • Experience developing and optimizing content specifically for VR/XR.
  • Experience with DCC tools such as Blender or Maya.
  • Experience with audio systems in interactive real-time applications.
  • Familiarity with source control workflows, particularly Perforce.
