Senior/Staff Software Engineer at Atomic Machines

Atomic Machines is hiring a Senior/Staff Software Engineer in Emeryville, CA, US +1 more. On-site. Pay: USD 180k-230k/yr.

About Atomic Machines

Atomic Machines is a stealth-mode startup developing a micromanufacturing technology called the Matter Compiler. The technology is intended to let new classes of micromachines be designed and built using manufacturing processes and a materials library that are not accessible to semiconductor manufacturing methods. The company is focusing first on MEMS (microelectromechanical systems) and describes its approach as MEMS 2.0. It has also created a first device enabled by its technology, which it plans to unveil.

Senior/Staff Software Engineer job description

Atomic Machines is ushering in a new era of micromanufacturing with its Matter Compiler™ technology platform. This platform enables new classes of micromachines to be designed and built by providing manufacturing processes and a materials library that are inaccessible to semiconductor manufacturing methods. It unlocks MEMS manufacturing not only for device classes that could never be produced by semiconductor methods, but also for entirely new categories. Furthermore, this digital platform is fully programmable in the way 3D printing is digital—but whereas 3D printing produces parts of a single material using a single process, the Matter Compiler™ technology platform is a multi-process, multi-material system: bits and raw materials go in, and complete, functional micromachines come out. The Atomic Machines team has also created an exciting first device—made possible only through the Matter Compiler™ technology platform—that we will be unveiling to the world soon.

Our offices are in Emeryville and Santa Clara, California.

Why This Role Matters

We are building the hardened execution layer for a new kind of fab. The team already has deep expertise in data engineering and algorithms. We need a hands-on software engineer with deep architectural experience and systems thinking to work directly with these experts and turn that expertise into simple, dependable software.

The primary responsibility is managing software complexity: defining clear responsibilities and interfaces, limiting coupling, and making the system easier to understand, test, operate, and change. Fluency in data and optimization, and a willingness to work with hardware support that responsibility.

What You’ll Do

  • Define component responsibilities, state ownership, and interfaces; remove unnecessary coupling and abstractions.
  • Build and test production software in Go and Python with data engineering and optimization experts.
  • Evolve existing systems through safe, incremental migrations.
  • Resolve integration issues with operators and engineers, including hands-on work with fab equipment.

What You’ll Need

  • 8+ years building production software; productive in Go and Python.
  • Demonstrated meaningful ownership of architectural decisions in a complex production system.
  • Demonstrate first-principles thinking with sound instincts for strategic tradeoffs.
  • Closed-loop experience: Operated or evolved the system long enough to observe the consequences of those decisions, explain what worked and failed, and improve the architecture.
  • Production ownership: Experience testing, operating, and safely migrating systems where correctness matters.
  • Collaboration: Translate expert knowledge and user needs into software requirements and acceptance criteria.
  • Domain fluency: Discuss data models, transactions, and durable history with data engineers; objectives, constraints, inputs, and outputs with optimization experts.
  • Experience with Hardware: Demonstrated interaction with equipment. Have had to understand and troubleshoot physical workflows.
  • Has willingness to work directly with fab equipment.
  • BS in CS or related field

The compensation for this position also includes equity and benefits.

Salary Range
